Meet Our Speakers: 

Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, is President of The John A. Hartford Foundation in New York City, a national philanthropy dedicated to improving the care of older adults. She serves as the chief strategist for the Foundation and her vision for better care of older adults is catalyzing the Age-Friendly Health Systems social movement. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and recently served on the independent Coronavirus Commission for Safety and Quality in Nursing Homes. She previously served as Dean of Health Sciences at Northeastern University and Founding Dean of the New York University College of Nursing. Dr. Fulmer is nationally and internationally recognized as a leading expert in geriatrics and is also known for conceptualization and development of the national NICHE program and research on the topic of elder abuse and neglect. She is the first nurse to have served on the board of the American Geriatrics Society. She is also the first nurse to have served as President of the Gerontological Society of America, which awarded her the 2019 Donald P. Kent Award for exemplifying the highest standards for professional leadership in the field of aging.

Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA is an Executive Partner at Flare Capital Partners and is a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and a member of the National Academy of Medicine. From 2015 through June of 2019, he served as CEO of Partners In Health, a global NGO providing a preferential option for the poor in health care in severely resource constrained settings. He assumed this role after serving on the PIH Board of Directors for a decade.

From 2010 until February of 2015, Dr. Gottlieb was the CEO of Partners HealthCare, the parent of the Brigham and Women’s and Massachusetts General Hospitals, the largest health care delivery organization in New England and among the largest biomedical research and training enterprises in the US. From 2002-2009, he was president of Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He also served as President of North Shore Medical Center and as Chair of Partners Psychiatry and Mental Health System. Dr. Gottlieb also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston from 2012-2016 and as its chair from 2016-2018.

Prior to coming to Boston, Dr. Gottlieb spent 15 years in positions of increasing leadership in health care in Philadelphia. He established the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center’s first program in geriatric psychiatry and developed it into a nationally recognized research, training, and clinical program. He served as executive vice-chair of psychiatry and associate dean for managed care at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, and as director and CEO of Friends Hospital, the nation’s first freestanding psychiatric hospital.

Dr. Gottlieb received a B.Sc. cum laude from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an M.D. from Albany Medical College in a six-year accelerated program and he completed a psychiatry residency at New York University/Bellevue Medical Center. As a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at Penn, he earned an M.B.A. with distinction from Wharton.

Dr. William Shrank is Humana’s Chief Medical Officer. His responsibilities include implementing Humana’s integrated care delivery strategy, with an emphasis on advancing the company’s clinical capabilities and core objective of improving the health outcomes of our members. He leads Humana’s Care Delivery Organization, clinical operations, and the Bold Goal population health strategy. Dr. Shrank most recently held the position of Chief Medical and Corporate Affairs Officer (July 2019-July 2021) during which time he reorganized and advanced our government affairs division. He is a member of the Management Team, which sets the firm’s strategic direction, and reports and to President and Chief Executive Officer, Bruce Broussard. Additionally, Dr. Shrank serves on the Board of National Committee for Quality Assurance and is co-chair of the Clinical Transformation Taskforce for the Health Care Payment Learning and Action Network.

Dr. Shrank joined Humana in April 2019, having previously been employed by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) where he served as Chief Medical Officer, Insurance Services Division from 2016 to 2019. At UPMC, Dr. Shrank was responsible for clinical operations, policy and quality for approximately 3.5 million members in Medicare, Medicaid, behavioral health, Managed Long Term Services & Supports and commercial lines of business. He also developed and evaluated population health programs to further advance the medical center’s mission as an integrated delivery and financing system.

Previously, Dr. Shrank served as Senior Vice President, Chief Scientific Officer, and Chief Medical Officer of Provider Innovation at CVS Health from 2013 to 2016. Prior to joining CVS Health, Dr. Shrank served as Director, Research and Rapid-Cycle Evaluation Group, for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, part of the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services from 2011 to 2013, where he led the evaluation of all payment and health system delivery reform programs and developed the rapid-cycle strategy to promote continuous quality improvement.

Dr. Shrank began his career as a practicing physician with Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and as an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. His research at Harvard focused on improving the quality of prescribing and the use of chronic medications. He has published more than 250 papers on these topics.

Dr. Shrank received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, and completed his residency in internal medicine at Georgetown University and his fellowship in Health Policy Research at the University of California, Los Angeles. He also earned a Master of Science degree in Health Services from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University.

Julie Yoo is a General Partner at Andreessen Horowitz where she leads investments in healthcare technology, with a focus on companies that are modernizing how we access, pay for, and experience the healthcare system.

Prior to joining a16z, Julie was the co-founder, Chief Product Officer, and Board Director at Kyruus, a venture-backed healthtech company recognized as a market leader in patient access. Julie led product management, engineering, and sales and marketing for the company, and helped scale the business to reach 20M patients and over 225,000 healthcare providers across the U.S.

Julie was previously VP of Product at Generation Health, and was with the company from its inception through acquisition by CVS Health. Julie was also a Product Manager at Knome, the world’s first whole genome sequencing service for private individuals. Julie’s tech career began as an early member of the software engineering team at Endeca Technologies, which was acquired by Oracle.

Julie studied computer science and pre-medicine as an undergrad at MIT and obtained an MS in genomics from Harvard-MIT HST and an MBA from MIT Sloan. Julie is a Young Global Leader with the World Economic Forum and has been recognized through numerous awards and honors from Becker’s Hospital Review, Health Data Management, MedTech Boston, and Rock Health.
